The level of tutor support has been exceptional with dedicated one on one support through the final dissertation module. The on-line library offered by Anglia Ruskin University is also second to none. My learning experience has been very positive and I would like to thank all the University staff for their support.
I chose to undertake the degree after receiving a brief from the University. Accreditation of years 1 & 2 for Senior Non-Commissioned RAF Medics initially attracted me.
Reflective practice is a huge aspect of the degree and I have been continually encouraged to reflect upon my practices and challenge myself. The impact is huge; I now know, for example, how to conduct a literature search, define what ‘good’ research is and how to apply research findings to answer specific questions.
Understanding and applying content learned in the Leadership and Strategic Management modules also enhances effectiveness of the organisation and contributes to personal development.
The biggest challenge was the elevation from GCSE to higher education. The first module (Leadership Theory) was fairly straight forward; the challenge was to begin to develop the required skills of level 6 formative writing and referencing.
These skills are acquired with practice and completion of the electronic activities in each module. Time management is also crucial as the modules require extensive engagement with the virtual learning environment, which can be challenging at times, especially for Service Personnel.
The most rewarding aspect of studying this degree is the desire to succeed and the self-belief that actually a degree isn’t something out of my reach. I enjoyed the research methodology module and learning the skills required to seek, analyse and interpret different forms of research. I have also enjoyed working with my colleagues on the cohort and learning with them.
The whole concept of distance learning can be daunting to someone who has never had the experience previously. The virtual learning environment is like a ‘computer classroom’ where you engage with other students and module tutors and it is extremely easy to use after familiarisation.

Distance learning is very flexible and enables you to study from the comfort of your own home, which has advantages and pitfalls. Taking charge of your own learning is important; produce your own study timetable to meet deadlines and plan ahead!
I would recommend this course to any RAF Medic wishing to commence or further their academic professional development. The knowledge I have acquired through the completion of my studies is directly transferable into the workplace, giving me confidence and developing my Leadership and Management skills.
The ability, for example, to apply a strategic management tool to an everyday problem in the Healthcare arena is something I would not have considered previously. Acquisition of the degree also increases your potential employability outside of the service and gives you a formal level 6 qualification. Any personnel considering undertaking the degree should ensure they have the ability to commit their time to studying.
