Meet Our Students - Karen Bowman

Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care FdSc

Karen Bowman

Since starting the course I have been promoted twice. The Foundation Degree has definitely played a part in my career success.

Karen is Deputy Operations Manager at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and has just completed her two year course with us.

Why did you choose to do the degree?

To support my personal and career development.

How do you feel you will benefit from studying for this qualification both professionally and personally?

To further develop the knowledge and experience I already have. To progress my career and stretch me academically to a level I have not previously experienced.

Which aspects of study have you found most challenging, how have you overcome these challenges?

I chose to study this course over a two year period, on top of a full time job. I will be honest, it has been extremely hard work. Keeping myself motivated has been difficult at times, and as a distance learner remaining focused and making myself study at weekends has also been challenging.

I overcame these challenges by always having a clear study plan and being aware of when deadlines were approaching. I made good use of the support that was available; phone tutorials with module leaders, opportunities to obtain feedback on draft work and seeking reassurance that I was on the right track when doubt crept in.

I was very aware when I chose to do the course that it would be hard work (it was probably even tougher than I had expected), however every time I received positive feedback and good results it encouraged me to keep going.

My workplace allowed me two days off per month for study time and having a very supportive husband also made a big difference.

What have you found most rewarding about studying this course?

I have learnt so much from this course, which I have been able to apply to my work.  My depth of knowledge and theory has increased and I have seen a consistent improvement in my academic writing over the two years. Hard work and dedication definitely pays off!

How have the skills and knowledge you have gained from this course benefitted your career?

Since starting the course I have been promoted twice. The Foundation Degree has definitely played a part in my career success.

How is your place of work benefitting from the course?

I've been able to apply every module to my job. The skills and knowledge I have gained from the course will be taken forward into my current role and I will continue to use and build on this knowledge.

How would you describe the support offered by both our teaching staff and support services?

The teaching staff have been excellent, very supportive and knowledgeable.

In particular I would like to highlight how fantastic my personal tutor Yvette Winnard has been with feedback, reassurance and general guidance.

How would you describe our University's online facilities and resources?

The online facilities have been excellent, very easy to navigate and guidance has always been available if necessary.

What advice would you give to anyone considering undertaking a course with Anglia Ruskin?

I would highly recommend a course with Anglia Ruskin University. I would advise anyone to be very realistic about what they are taking on, and the amount of time and effort that needs to be put in. If you give it your all, there is no reason not to succeed.

What tips do you have on fitting your studies around your outside commitments?

Draw up a clear study plan that incorporates the different modules and fits around your work and other commitments.

Make sure there is always some down time identified, so you have time to relax.

Try not to leave things until the last minute. If things don't go to plan, there is always time to sort out any problems without missing submission deadlines.

Would you recommend your course to others?

Definitely! I have learnt and developed so much and would encourage others to benefit from the same opportunity.

How would you sum up your experience of studying with Anglia Ruskin?

New - I had not studied academically at this level before so I was entering the unknown.

Interesting – Through the reading and research I gained so much knowledge and understanding.

Rewarding – The feedback and grades I received always made me feel the hard work was paying off.

Hard work – It was a challenge on top of a full time job.

Worthwhile – The knowledge, skills, confidence, feedback, grades and work promotions more than outweigh the hard work that was required.
