The BA (Hons) Business (Top-Up) is designed as a top-up for holders of the BTEC HND Business (Management), or equivalent, to progress to full undergraduate honours. You will acquire knowledge, understanding and a range of practical skills relating to key business disciplines which are applicable to a range of commercial and non-commercial sectors, and in a variety of geographical and cultural settings. You will also develop a range of transferrable skills that will aid you as you pursue a business career or further relevant study.

Courses available

These courses are suitable for students who want to both work and earn at the same time or have other personal commitments. All qualifications are awarded by Anglia Ruskin University, the only difference being you will benefit from the flexibility of studying whenever and wherever you want. You will even be invited to attend a graduation ceremony at either the Chelmsford or Cambridge campus.

Fees and funding

With RDI the cost of your tuition is 30-60% less than if you were studying on campus or with other distance learning providers.

You can also choose from a variety of ways to pay your course fees that allow you to remain in control of your finances whilst studying and working.

Course Details


1. Contemporary Management Issues

This module seeks to introduce you to a range of contemporary issues in management and to provide you with a critical understanding of related management decision making and pressures for organisational change.

The module will focus upon four decision making pressures relating to: Globalisation and the changing balance of economic power; Social and Demographic Change; Sustainable Business Practice; Ethical and social responsibility.

2. Strategic Management

This module will help you develop knowledge at the forefront of the strategic management discipline and a strategic awareness by analysing and evaluating strategic options and issues of implementation within the context of an increasingly volatile, turbulent and interconnected environment.

3. Managing Self and Others

This module will help you nurture and facilitate the development of those skills associated with personal development and work relationships and gain an appreciation of the underlying theory linked to the module content. In particular, this will take a more advanced look at the field of CPD and managing self, and will explore the skills required to manage and lead others effectively towards performance goals.

4. Financial Decision Making

This module will provide you with an understanding of the firm’s financing, distribution and risk management decisions. This will include an exploration of the alternative possible sources of finance for a Online-based distance learning business in the long and short term. You will be encouraged to think critically and form judgments about effective decision making and the implications of making poorly formed or timed decisions in these financial areas.

5. Marketing Strategy

This module will introduce you to the idea of marketing as a key strategic function in contemporary organisations. Starting with an initial exploration of marketing concepts, you are then encouraged to consider the relationship between marketing and the wider corporate and business strategies.

6. Dissertation

This module will help you develop skills as an independent learner and apply research competencies to design, undertake and evaluate independent research in an organisational setting. You will be required to prepare a 10,000 word dissertation on an applied topic of your choice. This involves the application of managerial concepts and research techniques to a significant organisational issue or problem.


You will complete five assignments of 2,000 to 4,000 words each, a learning diary and a 10,000 word dissertation.

Duration of Programme

This course is expected to be completed within 1.5 years. However, our online distance learning students have flexibility in setting their own pace of study, which means that the course can be completed in a minimum period of 1 year.


We recommend an average of 12-15 hours study time per week for this programme.

Entry Requirements
  • BTEC Level 5 HND in Business (or equivalent) normally awarded within the last five years.
  • English ability equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.0.

In addition to a completed application form:

  • Copies of your relevant certificates and/or transcripts
  • Personal statement (200-300 words)
  • One suitable reference. Please note we can only accept academic and/or professional work references.
  • Copy of your CV detailing your work history (covering the last five years)
  • Proof of English language ability (IELTS), if English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English.
