Anglia Ruskin University has been working with The Royal Air Force No 22 (Training) Group to provide a range of higher education courses specifically for RAF Medics. Our unique relationship with the RAF enables service personnel to receive academic credit for Generic and Specialist training, as well as for seniority or rank and experience. These credits can then be ‘topped up’ with additional modules to gain a full Health and Social Care qualification.

Course overview

If you’re currently working in first line management, are aiming for promotion to a management role, have just started working in the field, or simply want to take your interest in theory which underpins leadership and management practice to the next level, then this is the course for you.

The foundation degree gives you the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills which will enable you to expand your role as a leader/manager within your field of expertise. It also allows you to enhance your lifelong learning skills and will enable you to continue to an undergraduate degree should you wish to in the future.


This module is designed to develop your awareness of the need to underpin professional practice by the use of published research and up to date evidence.

This module will empower you to develop the necessary leadership skills in order to become a facilitator and motivator of change in the workplace. Effective leadership is essential to providing high quality practice in health and social care settings. Staff morale and motivation, professional development, quality improvement, service efficiency and effectiveness all depend significantly upon the style and quality of leadership at the front line. This module will require students to consider their own leadership skills empowering them to develop the necessary leadership skills in order to become a facilitator and motivator of change in the workplace.

This module is designed to give you an insight into human resource management functions and issues. It explores the constituent parts of the HR function and encourages the student to recognise the link between the quality of care delivery and HR management strategy and to apply relevant theories and concepts to their workplace.

This module is intended to provide a means by which you have an opportunity to broaden or deepen your understanding of a work-related topic in a manner that is supported and rigorous.


You will be assessed on a module-by-module basis via a number of methods including reports, presentations, essays, portfolios and reflection. You will be able to contextualise your assignments to meet your specific professional and personal needs. This imapacts positively on your practice and facilitates personal development.

How long does it take?

This course takes 2 years part-time (dependent upon existing credit at admission).


Teaching and Learning

This programme will be delivered as distance learning using the dedicated Learning Management System (LMS) to support the achievement of the learning outcomes.

The modules use a variety of teaching and learning strategies. The course aims to accommodate students with all the preferred styles of learning in a dynamic, interactive on-line environment.

Online facilities

You will have internet access to many of the University’s facilities through your ‘My.Anglia’ account which will be set up for you once you have registered as a student. This account will give you access to the digital library, the Learning Management System (LMS), rules and regulations, and your own email account.

As a distance learning student there are a vast number of high quality resources available to you through our digital library; including access to electronic journals, e-books, databases and other resources through the internet. This means that resources are available whenever you choose to study, whatever the time of day.

What support is available?

Tutorial support from the course team is available via email, telephone and the LMS. This includes one to one support from the module leaders, your personal tutor, IT helpdesk and the student adviser.


This course will enable those working within health and social care environments to undertake managerial roles and lead teams of inter-professional staff.

Entry Requirements

As a currently serving RAF Medic with a minimum of 4 years’ service, provided that you meet the following criteria, you have exemption from level 4.

Successful completion of TMT 1 or JMLC will exempt you from level 4.

Entry at Level 5 (FdSc)

If you hold TMT 2 and IMLC this will give you further 30 credits at level 5. Other qualifications including GST1 and GST2 may be considered on an individual basis.

Maximum APL – 160 credits

As a distance learner, you’ll also need a suitable computer with internet connection, together with sufficient IT competence to make effective use of word processing, internet and email.

If English is not your first language, you will be expected to demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.

Fees & Funding

ELCAS Provider NumberThis course costs £2,350 per year.

For military students: You can use your ELCs towards this course. Anglia Ruskin University is a recognised ELCAS provider (number 1007). Please contact your Learning Centre for details of ELC, eligibility and how to apply.

The course is eligible for funding by student loan.
