Karen Bowman

Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care FdSc

Since starting the course I have been promoted twice. The Foundation Degree has definitely played a part in my career success.

Karen is Deputy Operations Manager at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and has completed her two year course with us.

I chose to study this course over a two year period to progress my career and stretch me academically to a level I have not previously experienced.

I will be honest, it has been extremely hard work balancing it with full time work. I overcame these challenges by always having a clear study plan and being aware of when deadlines were approaching. I made good use of the support that was available; phone tutorials with module leaders, opportunities to obtain feedback on draft work and seeking reassurance that I was on the right track when doubt crept in. Every time I received positive feedback and good results it encouraged me to keep going.

My workplace allowed me two days off per month for study time and having a very supportive husband also made a big difference.

Degrees designed to complement and progress your career

I have learnt so much from this course, which I have been able to apply to my work. My depth of knowledge and theory has increased and I have seen a consistent improvement in my academic writing over the two years. Hard work and dedication definitely pays off!

I’ve been able to apply every module to my job. The skills and knowledge I have gained from the course will be taken forward into my current role and I will continue to use and build on this knowledge.

Why ARU?

The teaching staff have been excellent, very supportive and knowledgeable.

In particular I would like to highlight how fantastic my personal tutor Yvette Winnard has been with feedback, reassurance and general guidance.

The online facilities have been excellent, very easy to navigate and guidance has always been available if necessary. I have learnt and developed so much and would encourage others to benefit from the same opportunity. I would highly recommend a course with ARU.

Tips for students

I would advise anyone to be very realistic about what they are taking on, and the amount of time and effort that needs to be put in. If you give it your all, there is no reason not to succeed.

Draw up a clear study plan that incorporates the different modules and fits around your work and other commitments.

Make sure there is always some down time identified, so you have time to relax.

Try not to leave things until the last minute. If things don’t go to plan, there is always time to sort out any problems without missing submission deadlines.

The knowledge, skills, confidence, feedback, grades and work promotions more than outweigh the hard work that was required.
