Brett Went

Coaching for Development in Football BSc (Hons)

The course has broadened my outlook on the footballing industry and provided me with the opportunity to build contacts around the world.

Brett has a successful career in the Engineering industry spanning over 2 decades, and never considered his life-long hobby would turn into a promising career as a football coach. Brett has embraced change and is now on a journey to turn his passion into a career. We caught up with Brett during the course residential in Cambridge.

After 20 years in Engineering I felt the need for a change. I’ve always had a passion for sport and in particular football, but never considered it as a career option. The opportunity to study for a degree was not available to me when I was younger, so gaining a degree now will enable me to turn a life-long hobby into a career!

I have taken so much away from the course already. It will not only help further my career options, but my own personal development. I have enjoyed learning new academic skills and have used these skills beyond my studies in day to day life.

I have particularly enjoyed using the academic skills gained during the course to investigate my own coaching beliefs and then question them! This course has broadened my outlook on the footballing industry and provided me with the opportunity to build contacts around the world.

Expanding knowledge for career progression

The course has not only provided the opportunity to develop as a coach but also given me valuable insight into many other disciplines within the football industry. Sports psychology, nutrition and football business to name a few. Having only coached in a volunteer capacity, attending this course has provided me with the knowledge and confidence to apply for positions within the professional arena.

A supportive environment to get the most from your studies

After spending over 20 years out of the classroom I was very daunted by the thought of returning to education. With a constant show of support from my tutors, they were soon to dispel this fear. I’ve always been made to feel that ARU staff are there for my needs, constantly on hand to provide help and assistance, ensuring I get the most from the course.

I would definitely recommend a distance learning degree course for anyone needing to balance work, family and education.
